Each year MORPC plans the Clean Air Fair with the goal of familiarizing downtown
employees with information on respiratory health, green technologies and fuels,
healthy lifestyles, and transportation choices-ultimately raising awareness
of voluntary actions they can take to reduce pollution. Last year,
the Clean Air Fair educated and entertained over 1000 employees from American
Electric Power, Nationwide, City of Columbus, the State of Ohio, and the Arena
District.
Once again we will be honoring individuals and organizations that have accomplished
outstanding leadership in improving air quality in central Ohio through our
Clean Air Awards, which are presented at the Clean Air Fair.
Stop by and enjoy free ice cream and music from the CD101 ice cream
truck, where you could win a new bike from Cyclist

Clean Air Awards
The Clean Air Awards will once again be presented to individuals and organizations
that have accomplished outstanding leadership in improving air quality in central
Ohio. The following award winners will be honored at the Clean Air Fair:
Calfee, Halter and Griswold Law Firm
for becoming the region’s first company to sign onto the Eco-Bucks program, which
offers financial reward to employee commuters who use transit options other than
single occupancy vehicles. The Columbus law firm has adopted the 2 x 12 initiative,
encouraging each commuter to use an alternative mode of transportation to work just
two days a month. Over 20 percent of Calfee’s employees participated on the first
day of the Eco-Bucks program, using alternatives such as walking, biking, carpooling,
and public transportation.
Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
for implementing an Anti-Idling Policy. The Franklin County Sheriff's personnel
are improving our air quality by not allowing their county vehicles to idle for
any length of time unless it is absolutely essential for Sheriff's Office operations.
For example, cars should not be left idling while deputies take runs simply for
the purpose of keeping the inside of the car warm or cool. Also, by reducing the
amount of vehicle warm up time they will be reducing emissions and saving gas. By
taking these steps, the Franklin County Sheriff's Office will conserve fuel, reduce
pollution, and save significant funds that can be used for better purposes.
Dr. Lingying Zhao, with the Department of Food, Agricultural and
Biological Engineering at The Ohio State University, for establishing the first-ever air quality research extension program at OSU,
focusing on studying air emissions from large agriculture animal facilities and
air quality at farms, nearby communities and rural and urban interfaces. She also
developed two technologies: a unique wet scrubber for removal of ammonia emissions
and an electrostatic precipitator for controlling dust emissions from farms. Since
2003 about 1250 farmers participated in air quality education programs.
MORPC thanks all of the nominees for doing their part to raise awareness about reducing
pollution.
